Milton’s New Police Chief

Following a nationwide search with 100 applicants vying for the position, the City of Milton selected George “Rich” Austin, Jr. as its new chief of police.

Austin, who previously served as the Captain of Internal Affairs with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in N.C., officially joined the Milton Police Department on Jan. 30, 2017.

During his extensive law enforcement career, Austin has served in a variety of patrol, administrative and leadership positions. From his early days as a patrol officer in the small town of Pineville, N.C., located just outside of Charlotte, to his lengthy and highly decorated tenure with the City of Charlotte, population 809,000, he has demonstrated a commitment to building community partnerships, empowering staff and operating with transparency.
Austin was asked what attracted him to a career in law enforcement? He replied, “A lot of officers have the stock line, ‘Because I wanted to help people.’ For me, that line very much holds true, but it goes quite a bit deeper than that. I have family members in law enforcement, so I had an attraction to the field from a very early age.
